Late-term abortion provider Dr George Tiller was shot and killed earlier on this Sunday May 31st, 2009. The murder took place in the church where he served as an usher. His wife Jeanne was singing in the church choir at the time. This assassination was the culmination of protests and attacks on one of the last late-term abortion providers in the nation.
I don’t agree with late-term abortions. In fact, I don’t think they should be provided at all. But I also don’t agree with murdering a man in church, during service, while his wife is watching, either. This is beyond disgusting. You can think whatever you want about a Christian doctor who provides late-term abortions, the fact that he was murdered while he was worshiping, in his own church, in front of his wife, makes this act beyond repulsive, beyond disgusting.
To their great credit, the vast majority of pro-life organizations out there are appalled by this event and have publicly denounced it.
However, here is what the founder of the anti-abortion group Operation Rescue, Randall Terry, had to say:
George Tiller was a mass-murderer. We grieve for him that he did not have time to properly prepare his soul to face God. I am more concerned that the Obama Administration will use Tiller’s killing to intimidate pro-lifers into surrendering our most effective rhetoric and actions.
Never mind that a man was gunned down and killed in front of his family, in his own church. It’s a lot more important to make sure that abortion becomes illegal.
We need sane Christians to get the air time that national media keeps giving these nutcases. Anyone who thinks that the God who allowed himself to be tortured just to save all of mankind would condone and appreciate this act of pointless and insane violence is himself insane, and the sooner they stop being the only ones that national media pay attention to, the better.
Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, said it best:
Every life has to be protected, without regard to their age or views or actions.
That’s what being pro-life truly is about. Protect all life, including the doctors who provide abortions. And more importantly, do not celebrate when someone is murdered in the foyer of a church! It’s disgusting. It’s repulsive. And your conviction that Jesus approves of your actions is even more so.
